Heuer introduced the Carrera in 1964, and today, its one of the most iconic vintage Heuer chronograph models out there. The Carrera has gone through an interesting design evolution, indicative of styles and trends of each era. Starting in the 1960s with the ref. 2447, the Carrera featured a classic round case with the crown and pushers on the right. Moving into the 1970s, the brand released more funky styles, including some in tonneau-shaped cases with the left-hand crown orientation. The example we have here is the ref. 1553N with a tonneau-shaped stainless steel case and the caliber 15 automatic movement featuring a hidden micro-rotor inside.

The ref. 1553 came in different dial variants, and here we have the much sought-after blue dial version with an N at the end of the reference number, indicating its dial color. The blue dial has a satin, almost-metallic finish, with a horizontal striation across the dial that shows off various shades of blue under different light. The asymmetrical registers with running seconds on the left and a 30-minute counter on the right was a bold design choice. Although asymmetrical, the two sides of the dial are tied together by the silver color block, drawing attention to the chronograph minute counter at three o'clock and the CARRERA branding at nine. The off-white outer tachymeter scale frames the blue dial beautifully as well.

The left-hand orientation follows Heuers dedication to developing one of the first automatic chronograph movements, the caliber 11 in 1969, as part of a coalition with Breitling, Dubois Dépraz, and Hamilton-Buren. As an upgrade to the caliber 11, 1971s caliber 12 featured a faster beat rate of 21,600 vph, for better precision. A year later, Heuer and Breitling released the caliber 15, which used a KIF shock protection system while also being a cost-effective alternative to the prior variants.
